Sustainable solutions

We know. A cleaner future can’t wait.

For us, sustainability isn’t a box we check. It’s how we do business.

Respect for the environment is embedded into all aspects of our operations, from conserving energy, to managing resources, to reducing waste. And ultimately, this commitment to sustainability proves time and again that operating responsibly doesn’t mean compromising value. Our efforts in practicing sustainable building operations have gained us industry leading designations. From LEED® certifications to BOMA 360 designations, Energy Star certifications to most recently the WELL Health-Safety Rating™ - our North American office buildings strive to achieve industry best accreditations.

What is net zero carbon? Net zero carbon means achieving a balance between greenhouse gases emitted and those taken out of the atmosphere, or avoided. Organizations worldwide are setting targets for achieving net zero carbon as part of the global aim to limit climate change to 1.5 degrees of warming or less.

Brookfield Properties acknowledges the role that building emissions play in climate change and as such, we are committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 or sooner through Brookfield Asset Management’s signatory to the Net Zero Asset Managers initiative.

Pathway to net zero

That said, we’re not waiting until 2050 to take action. At Brookfield Properties, our net zero carbon journey is well underway. We’ve been quantifying our carbon since 2008 and we’re actively working to ensure all of our Canadian office properties will utilize 100% emissions free electricity by 2030, or sooner.

Additionally, we are taking a holistic view on carbon emissions for our assets. It’s not always about building brand new as the embodied (or upfront) carbon associated with new construction can far outweigh the operational emissions over the life of the building. As such, we feel that it is very important to continue to prioritize repurposing and retrofitting our existing buildings to reduce our net emissions as we move toward our 2050 target.
